Cases such as the Hezbollah Mole in the CIA case (Nada Nadim Prouty) and the 19-year old Jordanian illegal alien arrested in September for trying to blow up a downtown Dallas office tower, are both examples of why we need to protect our borders. The simple fact is that its more difficult to launch an terrorist attack when you can't get in the country.
What Progressives do not get (or care about) is that the opposition to amnesty is not driven by anti-Hispanic or anti-Immigration prejudice, they are driven by anti-Illegal-immigration concerns. There, is the huge difference. The Motivation of the Progressives to support illegal immigration is much more nefarious. They are looking for illegal immigrants to grow and extend their political power.
Don't take my words as proof, take a look at the video below. At the "progressive" America's Future Now! conference in Washington, DC this past June, SEIU International Executive Vice President Eliseo Medina addressed attendees on the issue immigration reform. Mr. Medina gave the Progressives reason for amnesty, 8 million new progressive voters:

So I think there's two things that matter for the progressive community.

When you are in the middle of a fight for your life you will remember who was there with you. And immigrants count on progressives to be able to do that.
Number two.
We reform the immigration laws, it puts 12 million people on the path to citizenship and eventually voters. Can you imagine if we have, even the same ratio, two out of three?
If we have eight million new voters who care about ...... and will be voting. We will be creating a governing coalition for the long term, not just for an election cycle.

Drug Price Reform
Americans demand the right
to obtain our prescription drugs

will save substantial amounts of money
and E-Verifying Driver's License recipients
will help secure our country
and E-Verifying all workers will generate 8.3 million jobs
