Congress Should Pass A Government Mandate To Purchase Guns

What happened early last Friday morning was a horrible, horrible tragedy. There are no adequate words to describe how awful the "Batman shooting" in Colorado was---twelve dead---dozens wounded--many of them children:
"I don't know how else to explain it, it's horrific," said Tracy Lauzon, director of EMS and trauma services at Aurora Medical Center.

The shooter was identified by two federal law enforcement officers as James Holmes, 24, of Aurora. He had at least four guns -- an "AK type" rifle, a shotgun and two handguns, a federal law enforcement official told CNN. The official also said the shooter used tear gas.
This was a premeditated act by a very sick mind, who threw down tear gas before he started shooting innocent victims. Apparently he also had explosives and his home was booby-trapped.

Of course people like Mayor Mike "The Mommy" Bloomberg practically tripped over their underwear racing to take advantage of the tragedy, telling the media last night's horror was just another reason to weaken the Second Amendment to the Constitution.
"There are so many murders with guns every day, it's just got to stop," Bloomberg told the John Gambling radio show. "And this is a real problem. No matter where you stand on the Second Amendment, no matter where you stand on guns, we have a right to hear from both of them concretely, not just in generalities -- specifically what are they going to do about guns?"
Perhaps the mayor should grab a 44-ounce Big Gulp and think about this for a second.

James Holmes is a nut job who had guns, tear gas and explosives. If this psychopath couldn't guns legally do you think he would have said, "Oh well, I guess I will just follow the law." He just massacred a crowd at a movie theater for Pete's sake.  He would have found a way to purchase weapons on the black market (or may Eric Holder would have given them to him).

As music great Charlie Daniels tweeted today:

The only thing more gun regulation would do is prevent the people who follow the law from getting guns! Oh, and if James Holmes was prevented from buying the guns, he still had the explosives.

I have a modest proposal for Mayor Mommy and his ilk.  The way last night's carnage could have been reduced was if someone in the audience had a gun and shot the psycho "right between the eyes."

Therefore I would like to recommend that Congress create a bill that requires every adult American to own a gun. Anybody who doesn't comply would pay a fine to the federal government (for Supreme Court purposes they could call it a tax). This mandate could be designated to pay down the federal debt.

My proposed law would put people in position to help themselves and pay down the debt. According to progressives that's what Obamacare does.  This may not prevent a psycho like Mr. Holmes from attempting something horrific but it sure gives the rest of us a fighting chance, unlike the Mommy Mayor whose proposal will only take guns away from the law abiding citizens.

My good friend Ed Morressey happens to agree with me. He wrote this a few weeks ago when John Roberts gave the OK to Obamacare.  Give it a read, it's really good.

Hell, it's just crazy enough to work. I'll support a law requiring me to buy a gun before I support one banning them outright.

I agree with you. In fact it's always troubled me ever since 9/11 that weapons are not permitted on planes. I don't think guns should be permitted simply because of explosive decompression, but a flight filled with knife wielding citizens would make terrorists think twice. Planes already have emergency systems where oxygen masks drop down. That could easily be adapted to also drop down a bowie, for instance.

Jeff, I couldn't agree more.

The more folks are disarmed, the more criminals will take advantage of them.
This particular company was told back in 2009 that gun free zones don't work. They didn't listen.
