I'm as patriotic as they come, but the anthem before a movie? Not every civic event requires a show of patriotism.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21392130.post-73867864398622994532010-10-26T00:07:30.712-04:002010-10-26T00:07:30.712-04:00I'm not sure how many people will read this, b...I'm not sure how many people will read this, but I just wanted to talk about this from my perspective. I have been a League moderator for four years. We are all volunteers and spend time preparing for each debate (they all have slightly different rules depending on the sponsoring organization or local League), travelling to the site and the two hours or more at the debate. Our role is to make sure candidates each have equal opportunity to answer each question, to prevent personal attacks by the candidates and also the audience, and to make sure questions and answers address the issues, not personalities. Each question and answer is timed, and candidates get a 30-second warning; when time is up, they have to stop, even if they are in mid-sentence. It's not easy, but it's something we do to make sure the candidates are heard and the community learns what each has to say. I've never seen the pledge begin a debate -- usually it's in a library or auditorium which has no flag, but that's besides the point. I think what happened is that the moderator was flustered by the request, probably she might have been a little nervous and thought the audience question would have been about the rules. People aren't perfect and, as I said, we're all volunteers, trying to do something positive for the community. Community meetings, such as PTA forums, budget meetings, etc. rarely start with the pledge. I'm sure her patriotic feelings weren't relevant to her answer -- she was just trying to follow the rules. One more thing I'd like you all to know: each year every local League rotates at naturalization court. To all new citizens, we give out little flags, booklets about citizenship and urge them to register to vote, which they can do outside the courtroom. During the ceremony, when everyone has taken the oath, we all stand and recite the pledge. It's very moving. The judge usually calls a League member and asks her (or him) to lead the pledge. I came here when I was two, and was naturalized in third grade. It's so special and emotional for me when I am called upon to lead the Pledge at those times. You wouldn't believe how meaningful EACH word can be -- and I've written about it in my local paper and always try to tell people about this experience. So, don't be angry at the moderator in Illinois and be grateful there is a League of Women Voters. We try hard to make the elections "fair and balanced" and help the community become more involved in the democratic process.jacob-josepher-and-familyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03918686882204953558noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21392130.post-31583009610716088172010-10-25T10:19:55.862-04:002010-10-25T10:19:55.862-04:00Hilarious.
