There is a conservative temple around the corner from our apartment, the one many of my cousins got married in and where my aunts and uncles prayed.

Naturally, we bought tickets last fall.

The young rabbi was so radically leftist, that we were uncomfortable. One comes to say Yiskar for ones parents, and we didn't want political propaganda.

I attended a breakfast seminar on a labor dispute in the neighborhood because I wanted to know the history. The dispute involved a Korean owned grocery, supposedly exploiting its workers. Despite my inquiry about whether or not a representative of the owners would be coming, the meeting was one-sided. The leftist union organizer made a racist comment about Koreans, and I called him on it. I made a few contrary points, but the rabbi shut me up. Another man had a more conservative view, but was paid no heed.

To say the least, we are not comfortable in this shul and will not return. We're on to try out a reform temple this year, and we are nervous about what we will find.

Dubba Brina
Isabel Archerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17610706495931240015noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21392130.post-77323996164056804912013-08-27T12:14:07.471-04:002013-08-27T12:14:07.471-04:00Whereas this is not on the High Holidays, my rabbi...Whereas this is not on the High Holidays, my rabbi's sermon at the beginning of June (or late May, I cannot remember) had over 5 minutes about giving "our fair share" should we be "so lucky" to have become wealthy. It was one of the more disappointing sermons he's ever given, as he is often not political at all, although I'll be interested in where he goes this year (I'm in the choir, so I am at all of the services).BradleyChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10688355247310468311noreply@blogger.com
