Not mentioned by name last night was Barack Obama. At least by the two most prominent speakers, Chris Christie and Ann Romney. The high road taken by the Christie and Romney made sense. While the crowd at the convention may have been disappointed at the lack of attacks, there was plenty of red meat thrown at the crowd during the early speakers. Christie and Mrs Romney's job was to define Mitt Romney and the issues before the Democrats did.
The best thing I can say about Ann Romney's address was she was real and convincing. She seemed very nervous at the beginning which made her seem even more genuine. Obviously her objective was to entice women, especially mothers to the Romney side.
It's the moms of this nation -- single, married, widowed -- who really hold this country together. We're the mothers, we're the wives, we're the grandmothers, we're the big sisters, we're the little sisters, we're the daughters.
You know it's true, don't you?
You're the ones who always have to do a little more.
You know what it's like to work a little harder during the day to earn the respect you deserve at work and then come home to help with that book report which just has to be done.
You know what those late night phone calls with an elderly parent are like and the long weekend drives just to see how they're doing.
You know the fastest route to the local emergency room and which doctors actually answer the phone when you call at night.The closest she came to attacking the president was when she said Mitt doesn't like to talk about how he has helped others because he sees it as a privilege, not a political talking point.
You know what it's like to sit in that graduation ceremony and wonder how it was that so many long days turned into years that went by so quickly.
You are the best of America. You are the hope of America. There would not be an America without you.
More than any politician could, Ann Romney said, "Women we get it!" And when she looked into the camera and said "This Man Will Not Fail" it was hard, even for a cynic not to believe her.
Many in the convention hall was disappointed by Christie because he took the high road without going after the president. After-all he has that confrontational attitude. And he began his speech describing the source of his attitude.
I am the son of an Irish father and a Sicilian mother. ....My Mom, who I lost 8 years ago, was the enforcer. She made sure we all knew who set the rules.Gee I couldn't tell!
In the automobile of life, Dad was just a passenger. Mom was the driver.....Mom also came from nothing. She was raised by a single mother who took three buses to get to work every day. And mom spent the time she was supposed to be a kid actually raising children - her two younger siblings. She was tough as nails and didn't suffer fools at all. The truth was she couldn't afford to. She spoke the truth - bluntly, directly and without much varnish.
I am her son.
Christie was the last in a line of Governors who spoke last night. Each turned around their state by cutting spending without raising taxes (some even cut taxes). Christie's keynote summed up what the other Governors were saying, its not going to be easy to turn things around but we have to do it now:
We've never been a country to shy away from the truth. History shows that we stand up when it counts and it's this quality that has defined our character and our significance in the world...
..You see, Mr. President - real leaders don't follow polls. Real leaders change polls.
..Our problems are big and the solutions will not be painless. We all must share in the sacrifice. Any leader that tells us differently is simply not telling the truth.
..I don't know about you, but I don't want my children and grandchildren to have to read in a history book what it was like to live in an American Century.
I don't want their only inheritance to be an enormous government that has overtaxed, overspent and over-borrowed a great people into second-class citizenship.
.... If you're willing to hear the truth about the hard road ahead, and the rewards for America that truth will bear, I'm here to begin with you this new era of truth-telling.With Paul Ryan coming up tonight, that will be the theme. We all have to make the sacrifices to turn the country around. Romney and Ryan won't kick the can down the road.
One more thing about last night. First if you are going to watch turn to CSPAN listen to the speeches and make your own mind up, without the commentary. Interestingly f those who watched on MSNBC missed speeches from African-Americans former Democratic Rep. Artur Davis and Mia Love, and Latino Texas senatorial hopeful Ted Cruz.
What a bunch of RACISTS on MSNBC.
