Jimmy Carter's New book:“Palestine Peace, Not Apartheid"

Another reason why Jewish Democrats Should Look at the Republican Party:

The Peanut President is considered an Elder Statesman in the Democratic party. He remains a key spokesman for their point of view. Jimmy even got to be a Keynote speaker at the convention that nominated John Kerry. Revered for the Camp David peace accords, Carter has ALWAY's been Anti-Israel. (before you point to those accords--remember it was more Sadat's doing than anyone’s)


Carter's new book, available on November 14, “Palestine Peace, Not Apartheid" is a written version of his usual hatchet job against Israel. As reported by James D. Besser in this week's Jewish Week:

Use of the word — apartheid — and some of the book’s content are quickly leaking out, and Jewish Democrats were scrambling this week to limit the impact on closely fought congressional races only weeks away

But will Democrats distance themselves from the man who helped turn Iran into an Islamic republic? They haven't yet and its been over 26 years since he left office.

Kean University political scientist Gilbert Kahn said that Carter’s long record of hostile comments about Israel could have a political impact.

“Everything in electoral politics is timing,” he said. “Releasing this book, or getting advanced copies, or doing interviews, refocuses people on an issue that doesn’t work for the Democrats. It could impact negatively on a portion of their voter base—even though that portion already knew about Carter’s feelings.”

Kahn said that no Democrats running for office share Carter’s views — “but this book could open voters’ minds to the argument that if you elect Democrats, you’re electing a party that has these kinds of views.”

Matthew Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition, said “we’ll have to wait and see what’s in the book” before responding. Brooks said he was trying to get an advance copy of the book, as did several leading Democrats. Simon and Schuster scheduled it to be released this month, but a spokesperson said Carter continues to make changes, putting off the official release until after the elections.

But Brooks made it clear the partisan Republican group will pounce if the Democratic response is not strong and unequivocal.

“Will they be critical? Will they remove Carter from his position at the (Democratic National Committee)? Or will they continue to invite him to the VIP booths at their various conventions?

Iran paid Meshaal $50 million not to release Shalit

The government of Iran paid Hamas politburo leader Khaled Meshaal $50 million not to permit the release of kidnapped IDF Corporal Gilad Shalit according to a report in the Hebrew daily Yedioth Ahronoth this morning (link in Hebrew).

According to the report, 'Western sources' say that a deal in principle to release Shalit in return for the release of 'hundreds' of 'Palestinian' prisoners terrorists was reached two months ago, but a few days later, a mission arrived from Iran and paid Meshaal $50 million to torpedo the deal. According to the report, after he received the money, Meshaal began to insist on the release of tens of 'tough prisoners' (usually the term that is used in Hebrew is those with 'blood on their hands' - that is not the term used this time, and I am not sure whether they mean prisoners who have murdered or something less than that)
