Fifty wounded in Kassam attack near IDF military base

Fifty soldiers were wounded after Palestinians fired a Kassam rocket into Israel on Monday night.

The rocket struck inside an IDF basic training camp in Zikim, located one kilometer north of the Gaza Strip. The Kassam landed next to a tent in which a group of soldiers were sleeping.

The severity of wounds received by the troops, both male and female, varied between them.

All of the wounded were evacuated to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon, Soroka Hospital in Beersheba and Sheba Hospital in Tel Hashomer.

Barzilai Hospital opened a hotline following the attack. The public is invited to call 1255171 for information.

Twenty ambulances were alerted to the scene, south of Ashkleon, where they are accompanied by two helicopters responsible for evacuating the wounded.

The Nasr Salah al-Din Brigades, the Palestinian Resistance Committee's armed wing, claimed responsibility for the attack. The IDF, who confirmed the attack, said that the rockets were fired from Beit Hanun.

Twenty-five Israelis soldiers were injured when a Qassam rocket launched from northern GazaNegev early Tuesday morning. This is the largest number of casualties from a Qassam attack to date. landed on a military base in the western

The Salah a-Din Brigades - the military arm of the Public Resistance Committees - took responsibility for the attack. Abu Mujahad, the organization's spokesman, told Ynet that the brigades had launched two rockets into Israel.

The army confirmed that a rocket had landed in the Zikkim base, about 1 kilometer north of the Gaza Strip, adding that soldiers were being treated on the scene for various injuries, but will be transferred to Barzilai hospital in Ashkelon. Magen David Adom reported sending 20 ambulances and two support helicopters to the scene.

The rocket, which was launched from the area of Bein Hanoun, landed next to a tent containing several soldiers. Despite the rocket threat on the region, it had been decided that they would continue sleeping in tents. The tent in question served as a makeshift meal tent, but soldiers from a nearby sleeping tent were also injured from the force of the blast and from shrapnel.

IDF forces in the area identified one launched rocket, which landed near a Gaza vicinity community. The area where the rocket landed has formerly been the target of several rocket attacks and, consequently, fortification projects were being undertaken in the area.

It was decided not to fully fortify the area, so there were only partial protections in place. Nonetheless, military sources posit that even these partial fortifications prevented a much larger catastrophe from occurring.

Technically it is not a problem to stop rockets: divide the enemy land into squares and make them clear that if there is a rocket out of the square everything is grounded there. They want to live somewhere, aren't they? Garbage-in, garbage-out. The only point is that this will cause too much causalities and none wants to use such means.
The answer of Mr.Peres to this issue was: "Nanotech beats rockets". That is, cover all the area with hornet planes and knock down by artillery or whatever, everything that appears similar to launchers.
