Then there were the ones who I call "shhhhh Jews." In other words, "shhhhh we don't want to upset the non-Jews!" . During the campaign, when I would point out Obama's anti-Israel history, they would say, "shhhhhhhhh what if he wins?" "If Obama wins," I tell them, "then it is TOO late. If Barack Obama becomes president of the United States, it will be a major disaster for American Jews, Israel and the United States of America."
Well folks, it looks as if 2010 will be the year of "now its too late" for Americans who support Israel. Last week Obama's Middle East Czar, George Mitchell appeared on the Charlie Rose show, and suggested that Israel could lose loan guarantees if she doesn't begin to meet Obama's version of cooperative.
Mitchell: "The reality is that, yes, of course the United States has both carrots and sticks, you have to be very careful about how and when you use them and apply [inaudible] --"Keep in mind this was only one week after Obama Chief of Staff, JINO (Jew in Name Only) Rahm Emanuel bashed Israel for not toeing the line and agreeing to Obama's bigoted view of achieving peace. In President Obama's world, Jews are only allowed to live in certain places in the world, and Israel's capitol Jerusalem is not one of them. In Obama's world Israel gets criticized for not coming to the peace table even though it is the Palestinians who used an Obama screw-up (calling for a settlement freeze) as an excuse to avoid talks. In Obama's world, previous agreements between the US and Israel are null and void, such as the agreement that Israel will not build any new settlements, but will continue to construct for natural growth of existing settlements.
Charlie Rose: "When was the last time we used a stick? … Give me - I'm serious about this. You sit there and you say to Israel, if you don't do this, what?"
George Mitchell: "I mean, under American law, the United States can withhold support on loan guarantees to Israel. President George W. Bush did so."
Charlie Rose: "Exactly."
George Mitchell: "On one occasion."
Charlie Rose: "And his father."
George Mitchell: "Well, the law that the most recent President Bush acted under, wasn't in place at the time of the first President Bush, so there were different mechanisms. That's one mechanism that has been publicly discussed, there are others. And you have to keep open whatever options, but our view is that, we think the way to approach this is to try to persuade the parties what is in their self interests. And we think that we are making some progress in that regard, and we are going to continue in that effort and we think the way to do that is to get them into negotiations."
Prime Minister Netanyahu issued a statement in response to Mitchell's remarks, reminding him that Israel has taken significant steps to propel the peace process forward while the Palestinian Authority refuses to renew peace talks. "It is the Palestinian Authority that needs to change its ways - certainly not the Israeli government"
Ministry of Finance sources said that the US loan guarantees enable Israel to obtain a higher credit rating, which lowers the interest paid on debt. However, Israel has not needed to resort to the guarantees to repay loans. Thanks to People like Koch and Peretz, and my congressman Steve Israel (who sold out the Jewish state for a chance to advance in progressive Democratic leadership), we have returned to the days of Jim Baker's "F**K The Jews they wont vote for us anyway." Except in this case, its "F**K the Jews they will vote for us whatever we do."
Steinitz added, "Only a few months ago, we reached an agreement with the US Department of the Treasury and Department of State on the loan guarantees for 2010 and 2011. There were no conditions attached. Israel has made, and continues to make, every effort, including difficult gestures, to renew the negotiations. We haven’t received any indication that the guarantees will be used to pressure us."
Minister of Education and Culture Gideon Saar added, "When we're told such things, in the way that they're said, we should make clear that as far as the peace talks are concerned, Israel will act on the basis of its vital interests, and not as a function of its relations with another country. Saar said that, in his opinion, "The US administration knows that it's the Palestinian Authority that is preventing peace talks by placing prior conditions that did not exist before. Israel has made hard and painful decisions while the Palestinians have done nothing. Israel will not accept prior conditions to the negotiations.
