Here's two stories that, at first glance seem unrelated:
Scott Matheson named to 10th Circuit appellate court
Washington » President Barack Obama on Wednesday named Utahn Scott Matheson Jr. to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit, elevating the former law school dean and son of a two-term governor to the appeals court covering Utah and five other states.
Obama to give Dems earful on health care;President Obama has invited Democratic congressional members to the White House for a closed reception Wednesday evening that just happens to include 10 House members who voted "no" on the health care reform bill.
...The "no" voters invited to tonight's gala are Rep. Jason Altmire of Pennsylvania; Rep. Allen Boyd of Florida; Rep. Lincoln Davis of Tennessee; Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin of South Dakota; Rep. Frank Kratovil Jr. of Maryland; Rep. Betsy Markey of Colorado; Rep. Jim Matheson of Utah; Rep. Scott Murphy of New York; Rep. Heath Shuler of North Carolina; and Rep. John Tanner of Tennessee.
...Mr. Obama will have ample time at the reception to press the "no" voters to reconsider their stance. As a pool report from a White House reporter noted Tuesday evening, all 31 invitees are Democrats and "quite a few are members of the House Blue Dog caucus, as to be expected."What an incredible coincidence. The day before Rep. Jim Matheson of Utah and the other anti-Obamacare Democrats meet with President Obama to get strong-armed about the Healthcare Plan, he just "happened" to nominate the congressman's brother to the Federal Appeals Court.
Scott Matheson appears to be well qualified for the position:
"Scott Matheson is a distinguished candidate for the 10th Circuit court," Obama said. "Both his legal and academic credentials are impressive and his commitment to judicial integrity is unwavering. I am honored to nominate this lifelong Utahn to the federal bench."
Matheson, a Democrat and former dean of the University of Utah School of Law, is known for his expertise in constitutional and evidentiary law. News of the nomination drew applause from both sides of the political aisle.
"I approve of that nomination. Scott is a very fine fellow," said Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Utah Republican and former chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. "He is well equipped and I think very learned for that position."
Matheson was a Rhodes Scholar and earned degrees from Stanford University, Oxford and the Yale Law School. The 10th Circuit covers Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico and Wyoming.
This could all be a coincidence, "oops how did that happen?" type of thing. Don't they say that "The Lord Works in Mysterious Ways." But then again, The Lord didn't go up through the ranks of Chicago Politics, President Obama did.
