The Berlin Wall was the physical representation of the "Cold War." The structure across the city of Berlin was not built to protect Communist Germany from the forces of freedom, it was constructed to keep the East Germans from fleeing communism. During the 750th anniversary of the founding of the city of Berlin, President Reagan explained the reasons the wall had to come down in a way no other POTUS has ever had the guts to confront an enemy:
We welcome change and openness; for we believe that freedom and security go together, that the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace. There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!
In one of the United States greatest victories, just two years after President Reagan made that speech, the wall was down, communism in eastern Europe was dead and the cold war was over.
In the 28 years in which the wall divided the city, about 5,000 people risked their lives escaping across it to the West and up to 200 more are estimated to have died in the attempt. No one sought to flee in the other direction, and few on either side of that barrier had any illusions about the oppressive nature of the regime that built it. Few today remember it's lessons. Especially the "Leader of the Free World."
On his to Asian trip the President sent out the message that freedom was in decline, this is how the
Times of India described it:
Implicitly acknowledging the decline of American dominance, Barack Obama on Sunday said the US was no longer in a position to "meet the rest of the world economically on our terms".
Speaking at a town hall meeting in Mumbai, he said, "I do think that one of the challenges that we are going face in the US, at a time when we are still recovering from the financial crisis is, how do we respond to some of the challenges of globalisation? The fact of the matter is that for most of my lifetime and I'll turn 50 next year - the US was such an enormously dominant economic power, we were such a large market, our industry, our technology, our manufacturing was so significant that we always met the rest of the world economically on our terms. And now because of the incredible rise of India and China and Brazil and other countries, the US remains the largest economy and the largest market, but there is real competition."
"This will keep America on its toes. America is going to have to compete. There is going to be a tug-of-war within the US between those who see globalisation as a threat and those who accept we live in a open integrated world, which has challenges and opportunities."
This country was not founded upon globalization, it was founded to keep a centralized government off the backs of the American people. That is the entire purpose of the constitution, just enough centralization to keep us safe, but no more than necessary.
As George Washington said in his
farewell address, the US should avoid calls for globalization:
Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence (I conjure you to believe me, fellow-citizens,) the jealousy of a free people ought to be constantly awake; since history and experience prove, that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of Republican Government.
This anniversary of the destruction of the Berlin Wall should be a reminder to Americans the horrors people faced while living under socialism. It should also make us remember that America's foreign policy used to be based on morality. We used to be a nation whose leaders believed so strongly in freedom that they pursued it relentlessly, and and that pursuit saved the West from socialist domination. America used to confront nations that limited freedom, today our President bows to the King of the repressive Saudi government. We used to help nations trying to free themselves from the rule of despots, but our President cut off aid to Honduras.
At an Indonesian press conference today, Barack Obama said this about the largest Communist dictatorship
left in the world.
“We want China to succeed and prosper,” Obama said. “That’s good for the United States if China continues on the path to development that it’s on. That means that first of all just from an humanitarian point of view, lifting millions of people out of poverty is a good thing. It’s also a huge expanding market, where Americans can sell goods and services, so we think China being prosperous and secure is a positive, and we’re not interested in containing that process. We want China to continue to achieve its development goals.”
No Mr. President, China is a horrible place that murders and tortures their own people. We do not want China to achieve its development goals, we want China to fall apart the way the Warsaw Pact did.
Obama is doing his best to help China to succeed and prosper with his reckless spending that forces America to be beholden to the Chinese Communist government for trillions of dollars.
Sadly, twenty-one years ago the United States one a major victory against tyranny. Today President Obama wants to hand that victory back to the forces of tyranny.
