GOP Effort To Cut United Nations Human Rights Council Funding Will Probably Be Unsuccessful

In a series of hearings beginning tomorrow Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, will be looking to de-fund parts of the United Nations, particularly the U.N. Human Rights Council (HRC) that is "a waste of taxpayer dollars.

""I'd like to make sure that we once and for all kill all U.S. funding for that beast," she said last month. "Because I don't think that it advances U.S. interests, I don't think that that's a pro-democracy group, it's a rogue's gallery, pariah states, they belong there because they don't want to be sanctioned."

The Congresswoman knows first hand about human rights, she was born in Havana, and her family escaped from Cuba on one of the last Pan Am flights out in 1960 (when she was 7). To some extent her family's escape from tyranny to freedom shapes her view of foreign policy. 
 
Among those who are scheduled to testify tomorrow are :

.... Peter Yeo, represents the United Nations Foundation/Better World Campaign, which at the start of President Obama's term urged the commander in chief to "mount a campaign" to secure a place on the HRC, which the Bush administration had boycotted.

"Support of our UN commitments is more than an obligation, it is a smart investment in America’s strategic, economic and political interests," Yeo told The Hill. "Continued American engagement and diplomacy at the UN will only advance our goals for democracy, human rights and world prosperity."

U.N. critics set to appear include Claudia Rosett, who unveiled the oil-for-food scandal in 2004 and 2005 in The Wall Street Journal; Brett Schaefer, who regularly takes on the U.N. at the conservative Heritage Foundation; and Hillel Neuer, executive director of Geneva-based UN Watch, which monitors the controversial HRC.

 
Rep Ros-Lehtinen's heart is certainly in the right place.The UN's Human Rights Council is a perfect example of what is wrong with the United Nations, at best it us a joke, at worst it does more to harm human rights than to protect those being abused. The council is a great example of the lunatics running the asylum, it is loaded with human rights violators, some of the country on this rogues gallery of human rights violators known as the UN Human Right's Council include, Nigeria, Pakistan, Egypt, China, Libya Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Egypt, Indonesia, Russia.

The balance of power on the  Human Rights Council is held by members of the OIC (Organization of Islamic Conference). Which is why the group is reluctant to address the real human rights violations in the world, such as Darfur or Iran. Instead the group spends its time trumping up charges against Israel and finding ways to cut off worldwide debate on Islamist terror, by calling it anti-Muslim racism.

One of President Obama's first foreign policy moves was to join this hate group (previous administrations have refused to join the group because of its anti-west agenda) who among other things was responsible for the two anti-Semitic "Durban" conferences. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen wants to de-fund the Human Rights Council, while a noble goal,  the UN with its massive budget will just be able to slip money from "one pocket to the other." And President Obama, who sees the UN as a key part of his policy of appeasement and submission will fight Ms Ros-Lehtinen over any cut to the United Nations. When it comes to Foreign Policy the president is holding most of the cards.  Sadly her effort to de-fund the UN HRC will probably be unsuccessful.
