Who Owns Debbie Wasserman Schultz?

Have you ever wondered what Debbie Wasserman Schultz (DWS) does when she isn't on TV mindlessly repeating the president's talking points?  Well, like most members of congress she is raising money for her next reelection campaign to represent parts of Southern Florida.

Despite her Florida district she gets her campaign donations from some very national sources,  making this observer wonder just who owns Debbie Wasserman Schultz? The analysis below looks at the top 100 donors to the DNC Chair's campaign and her PAC (many donors donated to both). All of the data comes from opensecrets.org, and covers her donations after the 2010 campaign.

The other category represents donors I did not know how to classify or in aggregate were too small to give their own classification. For example DWS got a donation from St. George's University a Medical School in the Caribbean that gave her $15,000 total.

If you live in DWS's district I hope you want a representative who is beholden to big labor, because over one-fifth of her money comes from labor sources.  In the chart below the lines in yellow were donations made to Rep. Wasserman Schultz's PAC the ones in blue were made directly to her campaign.

If Ms Schultz tells you that she receives donations from a diverse list she isn't lying.  The above is quite the diverse list of unions.

As one of the "official hit-men" for Barack Obama, DWS often describes the GOP as beholden to Wall Street and big banking. But she never talks about this list below that details her donors from investment firms, Wall Street Consultants, and Banks. Please make sure to note that two firms on the list, Community Financial Services Assn and Online Lenders Alliance are those "short-term, paycheck" lenders who some describe as preying on the poor.

Schultz receives another $27,000 from Corporate America Like ATT and Wal-Mart.

Florida's reputation as a place for seniors to retire may be the reason why DWS gets all this money from the medical field---well either that or her strong support for Obamacare. Obamacare may also be behind the $42,500 Shultz got from the insurance industry.

The powerful Ms Schultz gets many donations from the cable, internet and other entertainment industries which seems strange until you look at her committee assignments. There is no proof that the donations have to do with the fact that she sits on the Subcommittee on Intellectual Property, Competition, and the Internet, but it should raise some eyebrows.

I am also sure that Debbie Wasserman Shultz's campaign donations from the list of defense and other government contractors shown below, have nothing to do with the fact she serves on the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.

So in the end, who does own Debbie Wasserman Schultz?
There is no absolute proof that her donations are based on her work on Obamacare, or her committee assignments. I can't explain to you why she gets so much money from law firms, lobbyists and big real estate companies.

Allow me to re-frame the question.  "Who doesn't own DWS?" Sadly, the answer to that is --her constituents. They have no ownership of their representative.

She gets so much money from these special interests detailed above, is there any room for her to care about her constituents (especially when you add her role as DNC chair)? My guess would be no, she is beholden to many and has national responsibility.

Wasserman is ticking off a good portion of her constitutants through her backing of a prison near our schools and homes. She refuses to answer inquries about her position. You can see more about her lack of interest in representing her district at: http://www.noprisonswr.org/search/label/debbie%20wasserman%20schultz -
Keep up the good work with your blog.

Not sure if my last post went through.
DWS has been at it again - her constituents have no representation - she is backing a corporation building a prison close to our homes and schools. Our enquiries go unanswered. Very unpopular here.
