The Latest Crazy Excuse From The Warming Enthusiasts---Global Warming Causes Global Cooling

This sounds like things are getting a bit desperate for the folks in the global warming industry. Global Warming researchers from the United States and China on Thursday explained why the rapid global warming in the late 20th century has been slowing down over the last 15 years.  Actually it hasn't slowed down, it's stopped and as of the beginning of August it's not 15 years but the earth hasn't shown any warming for 17 years, 10 months.
The researchers reported in the U.S. journal Science that the so-called global warming hiatus may be mainly due to a massive movement of heat from shallow surface waters to deep regions of the Atlantic and Southern Oceans.
Understand what they are saying--hot shallow surface water (since its shallow surface water it must have been heated from the atmosphere even though the atmosphere hasn't warmed for almost 18 years), moves to deep regions of the Atlantic and Southern Oceans.

"Every week there's a new explanation of the hiatus," corresponding author Ka-Kit Tung, a professor of applied mathematics at the University of Washington, said in a statement.

Wait a second...a mathematician? Now I get it--he believes in global warming because he worked it out with chalk.
Tung and co-author Xianyao Chen of the Ocean University of China used recent observations of deep-sea temperatures from a network of devices called Argo floats that sample the water down to 2,000 meters.

The data showed an increase in heat sinking in Atlantic and Southern Oceans around 1999, when the rapid warming of the 20th century stopped.

"The finding is a surprise, since the current theories had pointed to the Pacific Ocean as the culprit for hiding heat," Tung said. "But the data are quite convincing and they show otherwise."
Ah I get it now hot water sinks.  Wait a second...hot water doesn't sink COLD water sinks. They taught us that in grade school.  Remember this simple experiment?

OH Wait they've  figured it out--sort of. The researchers also suggested that a sudden shift in salinity may have triggered this migration of heat to deeper waters.
Recent observations at the surface in the North Atlantic find record-high saltiness, Tung said, while at the same time, deeper water in the North Atlantic shows increasing amounts of heat.

"When it's heavy water on top of light water, it just plunges very fast and takes heat with it," Tung said.

As a result, a slow-moving current in the Atlantic, which carries heat between the two poles, sped up earlier this century to draw heat down almost 1,500 meters, the researchers said.
OK lets summarize.  The Atmosphere which isn't getting warmer, is heating up the water on the surface which is causing the warmer water sink which isn't supposed to happen. But as we learned in the section above the water sinking has nothing to do with the warming air it sinks because of the salt.  Which is also why my family physician worries about my blood pressure but I digress.
The researchers also dug up historical data to show that there was another hiatus between 1945 and 1975, which caused people to worry about the start of an Ice Age.
Earlier records in Central England show the 40- to 70-year cycle goes back centuries, and other records show it has existed for millennia.

The researchers concluded that changes in Atlantic Ocean circulation meant roughly 30 warmer years followed by 30 cooler years.

"There are recurrent cycles that are salinity-driven that can store heat deep in the Atlantic and Southern oceans," Tung said. " After 30 years of rapid warming in the warm phase, now it's time for the cool phase."

Since similar events have lasted 30 years historically, the researchers suggested that the current slowdown in global warming could last for another 15 years, then rapid warming will return.
But wait a second if that pattern has existed for millennia that means the warming period of the 70s-90s is part of a normal Earth climate pattern and not because of anything man does.  These global warming people are giving me (and the polar bear above) a headache.

But wait...that's a good thing...that's what I have been saying, the warming which ended almost 18 years ago isn't because of Man-- it is part of  a natural Earth cycle.

How sad that my reaction to this is "Meh."

Barry violates our laws with impugnity every day. It would appear there is no way to stop him. Think about that for a while. Then think about the two years we have left.

Barack Obama, Terrorist-in-Chief for the next eight hundred eighty-two days.

Good luck.

The hubris of the humans. We will control the climate by UN committee. Yeah, right.

I recall an audio engineer respond to a detailed technobabble explanation for why TV commercials seem to sound louder.

He said "If it sounds louder, than it *IS* louder."

The same reasoning can be applied here. If it doesn't feel warmer, than it's not warmer.

Okay, how long before they start using epicycles? Before that uppity denier Newton, epicycles worked pretty good at predicting the positions of the planets... as long as you kept tweaking and adding more of them to account for the actual observed positions. Sound familiar?

so now what?

So, in the brave new world of global warming quantum mechanics, convection no longer works like it used to. Interesting.
And I might note that the buzz was that, as the polar ice melts, it decreases the salinity of the water causing all sorts of mayhem in the North Atlantic (see: The Day After Tomorrow which was based on this premise) and yet, here we have an increase in salinity as the polar ice disappears (errr...not but, well, you know).
Again, interesting.
And they wonder why they are losing whatever relevance they might have had (in their minds).

Very much. ;-)

This evokes a principle I came up with years ago: _Any theory can be made to work if you put enough epicycles on it._

But the science is, like, settled or something. Algore said so.

Not only is climate “science” soft but is now brazenly fraudulent too, no longer hiding its bias in obscure black box statistics, just input data re-dating to afford sudden data drop-off at the end of temperature proxy averaging, giving a sudden but throughouly fraudulent hockey stick blade:

Didn't they just talk themselves out of a job? Guess not when it's government work.
So are we having an ice age or not? I just need to know how to dress.

You didn't read the article. The authors are offering evidence that the thermohaline circulation drives a 60-year global temperature cycle that is ultimately what produced the recent warming and is now causing the current cooling. This is actually a very strong argument against anthropogenic global warming. Tung is a well known skeptic.

Wouldn't salinity DECREASE with global warming? Warming melts surface ice (sea ice, glaciers)which is fresh water. This would dilute the salinity of water atb the surface and in shallow estuaries (again shallow water).

I don't think it is correct because the density gradient is not large enough to support the temp inversion. But if true, it would explain Arctic ice melting, because of the slowdown of the Gulf stream and recirculation of equatorial waters with the Arctic ocean (Arctic ocean water remains stagnant and gets too warm in the sun)

Thermodynamics tell us that heat RISES.

Go to any deep water lake.
Take a temperature at the surface and compare it to the temperature at a depth of say 100 feet.
The water is COOLER the lower it is.

So what they are saying is that the IPCC's 2007 4th Assessment Report (the gold standard in climate science... based solely on peer-reviewed literature (a lie)... the settled science... indisputable... incontrovertible) has turned out to be crap after all, just as sceptics always claimed.

Then the solution to global warming is to cause more global warming 'cuz that will then cause global cooling. Huh?
