I spent my lunch time today at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza with thousands of others to let the world know that they must to more to release Ehud Goldwasser, Eldad Regev, and Gilad Schalit some parts of the rally were incredibly moving, others were incredibly disappointing.
It has been a long time since I heard Elie Wiesel speak. I had forgotten how calmly he speaks and the emotions that pour out of his word he called the terrorist kidnappers "cowards and criminals" and how they "must and will realize that their inhuman behavior has caused international outrage to all civilized people."
Miki Goldwasser brought tears to our eyes as she described the last time she saw her son Eldad at his wedding to Karnit.
Karnit Goldwasser was the last to speak she concluded the afternoon rally by encouraging people all over the world to "raise their voices" to demand the release of her husband and the others being held by the terrorists. She also wondered why the wives and parents of Lebanese prisoners don't speak out "Maybe someone is paying them to be quiet," she said. "But if they raise their voices, I am sure they could get their sons back. [Sheikh Hassan] Nasrallah, who promised to return the Lebanese prisoners, said he was a great leader, but it doesn't seem like it."
That was it..there were plenty of other speakers and for the most part their speeches sounded like "clinical stump speeches" with the exception of Congressman Anthony Weiner.
The cavalcade of politicians both from the government side and from the Jewish organization side were too controlled to rally support. The Turkish Muslim representative showed more passion against the terrorist animals than the politos. And yes I heard a Muslim stand in front of a public crowd and say that terrorists were criminals.
What I didn't here is people pointing to that building and say...WHY IS FRANCE RECOGNIZING HEZBOLLAH AS A LEGITIMATE ENTITY ?--WHY IS NORWAY AND RUSSIA DEALING WITH HAMAS? WHY DOES IT SEEM THAT HALF OF BRITAIN IS BOYCOTTING ISRAEL WHILE THE SAME GROUP, HAMAS, THAT KIDNAPPED ALAN JOHNSTON AND GILAD SCHALIT? WHY IS THE SECRETARY OF STATE SO WILLING TO PUSH ISRAEL TO MAKE CONCESSIONS TO TERRORISTS THAT WE WOULDN'T MAKE?
And why is the Israeli Government so anxious to create new Ehud Goldwassers, Eldad Regevs, and Gilad Schalits by making one-sided concessions--freeing terrorist criminals and granting other criminals amnesty...without bringing ANY of their soldiers home.
That's what I mean by PC: the speakers who could make us think--did. The speakers who could make us cry--did. The speakers who could rally us--DID NOT! They were being nice. The purpose of a rally is supposed to be two-fold, to get a large enough crowd to warrant press coverage and get broad exposure for the issue and to motivate the attendees to go out an work for the cause, this event did neither.
