The adversaries of the Constitution seem to have lost sight of the people altogether in their reasonings on this subject; and to have viewed these different establishments, not only as mutual rivals and enemies, but as uncontrolled by any common superior in their efforts to usurp the authorities of each other. These gentlemen must here be reminded of their error. They must be told that the ultimate authority, wherever the derivative may be found, resides in the people alone, and that it will not depend merely on the comparative ambition or address of the different governments, whether either, or which of them, will be able to enlarge its sphere of jurisdiction at the expense of the other. Truth, no less than decency, requires that the event in every case should be supposed to depend on the sentiments and sanction of their common constituents
-James Madison Federalist 46Like most progressives, Nancy Pelosi is not a big believer in the Constitution or the American people. As James Madison described above, the Federal government should be following the will of the American people, but Pelosi sees it the other way around.
Nancy Pelosi was interviewed by Elizabeth Vargas on ABC's This Week this morning and she has a message for the members of her Democratic Caucus, "screw the voters, we know whats best for them." She didn't say it in those words but she was just as clear.
Well first of all our members -- every one of them -- wants health care. I think everybody wants affordable health care for all Americans. They know that this will take courage. It took courage to pass Social Security. It took courage to pass Medicare. And many of the same forces that were at work decades ago are at work again against this bill.
But the American people need it, why are we here? We're not here just to self perpetuate our service in Congress. We're here to do the job for the American people. To get them results that gives them not only health security, but economic security, because the health issue is an economic issue for -- for America's families. She is saying we are not there to represent the will of the people, we are there to "do the job for the American people" because obviously they are too dumb to do the job themselves.
But the people do know best, we know that this government take-over of 17% of the economy will not only infringe on our individual rights, but will bankrupt the nation saddling our children, grandchildren and grandchildren's grandchildren with a horrible debt, taking away their chance to grow up with the same kind of opportunity that was presented to our generation.
“… we shall all consider ourselves unauthorized to saddle posterity with our debts, and morally bound to pay them ourselves; and consequently within what may be deemed the period of a generation, or the life [expectancy] of the majority.” (Bergh, Writings of Thomas Jefferson, 13:358)The time is now, contact your legislators today, this bill must not pass.
