Bush Speechwriter Claims Obama Plagiarized Part of SOTU

Has President Obama gone from blaming Bush to stealing from Bush? That is what former Bush speechwriter Mark Thiessen claims. On the post State of the Union version of The Kelly Files on Fox News channel, Host Megyn Kelly interviewed Thiessen about why some lines in the 2014 SOTU sounded familiar.
It was eerily familiar. There were lines like, 'Our job is to help Americans build a future of hope and opportunity. A future of hope and opportunity begins with a growing economy. A future of hope and opportunity requires our citizens have affordable and available health care. Extending opportunity and hope depends on a stable supply of energy.’

All of that came from the 2007 State of the Union address by George W. Bush. So, Barack Obama has gone from blaming George W. bush to plagiarizing George W. Bush.

Thiessen said later that the reason he remembered it so well was the 2007 Bush speech was the first State of the Union address which he served as the lead writer.

After hearing one lie after another, I stopped watching the SOTU last night. It was just more of the same rhetoric from Obama. When he wasn't out and out lying, he was pulling one of his "slight of hand" tricks-like making a big revelation that he is raising the minimum wage-by EO, of course. Trouble is--it's only for Federal contractors and is not fully effective until 2015. Does he think we are stupid?

Why do people persist in using the bogus "budget deficit" and not the real numbers? The only reliable metric on how much debt is added each fiscal year is how much we added to the federal debt.

Here is a spreadsheet I created of our debt for the past 12 years:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AnMzo2ta9i_xdHB3RGdZaHlWRnA3b3ZPQnlEWS1rMWc#gid=0

As an aside, Presidents do not spend. That is the job of Congress. And the party who controls congress is responsible for the debt added that fiscal year.

With that in mind, look at debt added under the Bush administration. When we had a mixed or GOP controlled Congress the debt was being added at a rate between $400B and $600B per fiscal year. This includes "off budget" items and war spending.

Here are the numbers for the federal debt from the US Treasury's website in a handy spreadsheet:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AnMzo2ta9i_xdHB3RGdZaHlWRnA3b3ZPQnlEWS1rMWc#gid=0

Then in 2007 Democrats took total control of both houses of Congress and began their massive borrowing/spending. The first fiscal year after they retook congress they doubled the debt sending it over $1 Trillion. The following year they nearly doubled it again adding close to $1.9 Trillion. I refuse to blame Bush for spending committed by a Democrat Congress who overrode Bush vetos to do so.

I have argued that this reckless spending by the Democrats, along with their other policies, both attempted and completed (41% hike in minimum wage, cap and tax, porked up water projects bill, ethanol mandates, etc), was responsible for the bursting of the bubble they knew our economy was in to deliver Rham's "crisis" and allow a socialist like Obama to get elected.

Another point that everyone seems to miss is last years deficit was artificially lowered by the government shutdown. The shutdown took place from Oct 1 to Oct 16.

On 10/16/2013 the debt stood at $16,747,360,549,057.23. The following day the debt was increased to $17,075,590,107,963.57. One day? $328,229,558,906.34 was added? That $328 Billion in debt belongs to fiscal 2013 and not this year. Yet another fraud from Obama and his cronies.

So its a lie to claim "The deficit for fiscal year 2013 (which ended Sept. 30) fell to $680 billion." What happens when you add the $328 Billion? You get a debt for fiscal 2013 of over $1 Trillion! And this with the "Sequester" and GOP controlling one house of Congress.

Cheers,

O.V.

The deficit for fiscal 2013 was @ $1 tril if you include the $328 bil borrowed first thing in Oct 2013 to replenish federal funds emptied by the "extraordinary measures" taken in fiscal 2013 to avoid hitting the debt ceiling before October. They borrowed it in fiscal 2014 to cover the funding they purposely stopped in 2013.
I'm surprised you people omitted that fact.
